and when we thought it would last forever… is a solo exhibition by Greg Ito composed of new sculpture, painting, and installation. The works are a mediation of common desires incorporating a visual vernacular tailored by familiar aesthetic tropes. Using everyday objects and textures, “and when we thought it would last forever…” becomes a meeting point that dovetails the innate and idealized human desire for freedom, against the contemporary constructed systems of work and servitude.

Exploring multiple methodologies of contemporary artistic production, Ito prompts the viewer to experience disharmonies between common cultural objects’ practical functionalities and their imbedded symbolic connotations developed over time. This relationship offers both distressing and comedic experiences, cultivating subtle narratives which gravitate towards an investigation of a romantic nostalgia for escape and pleasure. Ito’s practice often roams within concepts surrounding human interactions and one’s relationship with companionship and solitude.

Greg Ito, currently lives and works in San Francisco and co-founded Ever Gold Gallery, San Francisco and the San Francisco Arts Quarterly - SFAQ, an international arts and culture publication. Ito has exhibited at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) - San Francisco, Eleanor Harwood Gallery - San Francisco, and Mountain Fold - New York. Ito recently was awarded the Loop Arts Award 2013, and True Silver Residency, San Francisco 2013.
